A macroscopic classification of the embryonic development of the one-sided livebearer Jenynsia multidentata (Teleostei: Anablepidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
López-Rodríguez,Nathalia C.; Barros,Cíntia M. de; Petry,Ana Cristina.
ABSTRACT This study proposes eight stages according to the main discernible changes recorded throughout the embryonic development of Jenynsia multidentata. The development of morphological embryo structures, pigmentation, and changes in tissues connecting mother and embryo were included in the stage characterization. From the fertilized egg (Stage 1), an embryo reaches the intermediary stages when presenting yolk syncytial layer (Stage 2), initial pigmentation of the outer layers of the retina and dorsal region of the head (Stage 3), and the sprouting of the caudal (Stage 4), dorsal and anal fins (Stage 5). During the later stages, the ovarian folds enter the gills, and the body pigmentation becomes more intense (Stage 6), the body becomes elongated (Stage...

A study of pigments in some developmental stages of Aurelia aurita Lam OMA
Van den Branden, C.; Van den Sande, P.; Decleir, W..
Unfed polyps of Aurelia aurita are white. Fed with Artemia salina nauplii they turn to pinkish because of the canthaxanthin present in the food. The deep brown-red colour of strobila and ephyra is due to melanin.

Comparative demography of the exotic Harmonia axyridis with other aphidophagous coccinellids reared on artificial diet PAB
Milléo,Julianne; Fernandes,Francisco Sales; Godoy,Wesley Augusto Conde.
The objective of this work was to compare biological aspects and life table parameters of the coccinellids Harmonia axyridis, Cycloneda sanguineaand Hippodamia convergens. Insects were fed eggs of Anagasta kuehniella, and reared at 24.5±1ºC, 70±10% relative humidity, with a 12 hour photophase. Hippodamia convergenstook about 1.6 day to complete development, longer than H. axyridis, and 2.4 day longer than C. sanguinea. At immature stages, H. axyridisexhibited the highest survival percentage (49.2%), in comparison to the other coccinellids. For mean adult longevity, H. convergenswas deficient, in comparison with the other species. Mean period of pre oviposition was the longest in C. sanguinea; the longest oviposition time occurred for H. axyridis; and the...

Effets de l'ablation des pedoncules oculaires, au cours des stades Zoe 3 et Zoe 4 sur la mue de la metamorphose de Palaemonetes varians (Leach) (Crustacea, Decapoda) ArchiMer
Leroux, Aurelien.
The presence of two (or at least one) eyestalks is required for inducing a complete, monoecdysial metamorphosis in Palaemonetes varians . This induction is performed, at 20 degree C, in about 20 hours situated on either side of the third larval moult when metamorphosis occurs at the fourth one. The mechanism of induction is discussed.

Embryonic development of four species of palaemonid prawns (Crustacea, Decapoda): pre-naupliar, naupliar and post-naupliar periods Zoologia
Müller,Yara; Ammar,Dib; Nazari,Evelise.
The embryonic development of four species of the family Palaemonidae was studied under laboratory conditions. Adults of Macrobrachium olfersi (Wiegman, 1836), Macrobrachium potiuna (Müller, 1880), Palaemon pandaliformis (Stimpson, 1871) and Palaemonetes argentinus (Nobili, 1901) were collected in Santa Catarina Island, Santa Catarina, Brazil and maintained at 26ºC. The following embryonic characters were analyzed: egg shape, yolk organization and cleavage plane, naupliar and post-naupliar appendages, stomodeum, optical lobes, eyes, telson, embryo curvature and the space occupied by the embryo in the egg. Different rates of development were observed for the four species, with M. potiuna showing the longest time of embryogenesis. The species studied followed...

Ensiled Artemia biomass: a promising and practical feed for penaeid shrimp postlarvae OMA
Abelin, P.; Tackaert, W.; Sorgeloos, P..
Unlike Artemia nauplii which are used extensively as convenient live feed in aquaculture, large-scale utilization of Artemia juveniles and adults (biomass) is still very limited and in most cases restricted to those operations which are located near an Artemia production site. Currently applied techniques for preservation of Artemia biomass (e.g. blast-freezing or drying) are often cost prohibitive and in several cases not applicable at the remote and scattered sites where the Artemia biomass is available. An inexpensive technique which can be readily applied under field conditions and allowing to stabilize and retain the nutritional quality of...

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to determine the maximum development rates for the phases of emergence, vegetative and reproductive, and to test the performance of the Wang and Engel (WE) model for simulating the development of landrace and improved maize cultivars sown on different dates. Model calibration was with data collected from a field experiment with a sowing date on December 13, 2014, and the model was tested with independent data from experiments with five sowing dates (August 20 and November 4, 2013, February 3 and August 15, 2014, and January 7, 2015) in Santa Maria, RS. The experiment was a complete randomized block design with four replicates. The dates of emergence (EM), silking (R1), and physiological maturity (R6) of two...

Historia de vida temprana de la corvina rubia (Micropogonias furnieri, Sciaenidae) en el Estuario del Río de La Plata OceanDocs
Braverman, M..
This study encompasses the bio-physical interactions of whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) early life stages living in La Plata estuary (Argentina-Uruguay, South America) to understand how they take advantage of the estuarine dynamics while traveling from spawning to nursery areas and undergoing ontogenetic and associated ecological changes. The analyses used include studies of spatio-temporal distribution length-dependent patterns; growth patterns looking for settlement marks in otoliths; and development related to metamorphosis and ontogenetic variations of the diet and trophic level. Samples and data come from vertically stratified samplings from 3 cruises (2005, 2006 and 2009). Distributional data also comes from an historic database. Results...

Patrones de distribución espacio-temporal de los estadíos embrionarios y larvales de la anchoíta (Engraulis anchoita Hubbs & Marini) a micro y macro-escala. Su relación con la supervivencia OceanDocs
Sánchez, R.P..
This dissertation is focused on the study of implications of spatial patterns on survival of eggs and larvae and subsequent recruitment of the SW Atlantic anchovy, Engraulis anchoita. The study of distribution patterns is encompassed within the conceptual framework of the analysis of reproductive strategies of marine bony fish, as adaptations that enable them to cope with and actively exploit environmental variability, regulating their abundance and avoiding extinction. The SW Atlantic anchovy, is ideally suitable for studies on reproductive biology and recruitment on a comparative basis. Its spawning and nursery grounds are located in very diverse ecosystems. This variety refers to their physico-chemical properties, carrying capacity, the influence of...

Selenium protective activity against aflatoxin B1 adverse affects on Drosophila melanogaster BABT
Uysal,Handan; Agar,Güleray.
The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of AFB1 and AFB1+Se4+ on various developmental stages of Drosophila melanogaster were investigated. Both different concentrations of AFB1 and Se4+ applied with AFB1 were fed during the flies developmental period (egg, larva and pupae). When F1 progeny of control and application groups were compared with each other, AFB1 was found to have extending the process of metamorphosis and decreasing the total number of offsprings. But, these negative effects were inhibited with selenium treatment at different concentrations (4.0 and 8.0 ppm). These results suggested that selenium could effectively inhibit AFB1- induced abnormalities of the developmental stages of D.melanogaster.
